Lil Uzi Vertの楽曲制作プロセスをエンジニアが語る

今年デビューアルバム『Luv Is Rage 2』をリリースしたLil Uzi Vertといえば、楽曲制作プロセスの速さでも知られている。

毎日のようにスタジオに入るUziは、あるインタビューで「未発表曲が2700曲ある」とも話している。2015年からUziのエンジニアを務めているKesha Leeが、イギリスの雑誌Sound on Soundに登場し、Uziとの制作プロセスについて語った。

This is the greatest honor to be in a magazine that Ive known of and have gone to for music technology knowledge. KeshaはUziとの制作プロセスをこう語る。「まずUziに来たビートメイカーからのメールが、私に転送されてきて、私は彼らにこう返す。『私たちは今スタジオにいるから、ビートを送ってくれない？』」

このようにして集まったビートを、Uziは全部聴きたがるが、細かく聴きこむのではなく、レコーディングブースに行って初めてちゃんとしっかり聴き込んでいくという。そしてUziは全てのバースを1回で録りきるのではなく、細かくパンチインしていくタイプだともKeshaは明かしている。

スタジオ内はUziの友人たちでいつもすし詰め状態になっているというが、実際に音楽制作に携わっているのはUzi、Kesha、さらにプロデューサーのDon Cannonの3人だけだという。Keshaは「Cannonはビートも作るし、他のビートメイカーからのビートに対してもエグゼクティブプロデューサーのような役割を果たす」と語り、こう続けた。

「Uziがレコーディングし終わったら、私は彼にどの箇所を、トラックの音を消して彼の声だけにさせるかを決めさせる。彼にミュートボタンを押させて、声だけになる範囲を指定させ、再びミュートボタンをUziが押すとトラックの音が戻ってくる」と細かいプロセスまで、Keshaは明かしている。

このようなお互いを理解しているエンジニアの存在がUziが膨大な楽曲を制作できるのに、大きい役割を果たしているだろう。
